Southland Mall Redevelopment — Design Philosophy & Approach

Lead Designer: Harry Burrell, while at CPH

“Reimagining a Mall. Reconnecting a Community.”

Burrell Architects presents the Southland Mall Redevelopment as a transformative study in reimagining an existing regional retail center for a new era. Serving as Lead Designer while working for CPH, Harry Burrell developed a comprehensive master plan that preserved the original mall structure while strategically building around it to create a more connected, walkable, and future-ready environment. The design strengthens circulation, enhances arrival experiences, and repositions the property as a vibrant community destination that responds to Florida’s climate, landscape, and lifestyle. By retaining the core building and revitalizing the surrounding areas, the master plan delivers long-term value with minimized disruption.

A major component of the redevelopment involved crafting three new signature entrances and redesigning three primary public spaces, each conceived to introduce a bold new identity for the mall. As Lead Designer at CPH, Harry shaped these spaces with warm materials, clear architectural gestures, upgraded lighting, and enhanced landscape elements that create inviting social zones and memorable arrival moments. The transformed public spaces integrate shade, seating, water elements, and improved pedestrian comfort, all designed with a deep understanding of how people gather and move through retail environments. Together, these interventions reposition Southland Mall as a modern, experience-driven hub for the community—rooted in strong design clarity and a human-centered approach.

Interior Common Areas

The interior common areas of the Southland Mall redevelopment are envisioned as warm, welcoming, and highly functional gathering environments that elevate the visitor experience. Designed with Florida’s lifestyle in mind, these spaces introduce natural materials, enhanced lighting, and a more open, contemporary layout that encourages movement and social connection. Seating clusters, improved wayfinding, integrated planting, and upgraded finishes bring a sense of comfort and refinement, transforming the interiors from simple circulation corridors into activated community spaces. Every detail—from lighting strategy to material palette—is crafted to create a cohesive, inviting atmosphere that supports retail, food, and leisure activities while defining a fresh, modern identity for the mall.
